In the face of urgent social problems of poverty and injustice, Australia needs more insightful thought and action to improve the quality of life for peoples everywhere. Social Policy Connections addresses these issues. SPC draws on the rich resources of the Christian social traditions, and brings them into more creative engagement with contemporary challenges to human wellbeing.

SPC fosters this engagement by developing its own public voice about how to re-vision social policies, highlighting the ethical or moral aspects involved, and providing platforms for debate and advocacy.

Many Australians find their sense of social responsibility affirmed and enhanced by the values of the Gospel. They believe that God identifies intensely with the disadvantaged and distressed, and that Christ urges his followers to do so as well. Thus the churches have generally emphasised social responsibility and genuine care for others. They have developed their social views in terms of human rights, social equity and equality of opportunity, and the fostering of societies that support the flourishing of all their people, especially of those who are disadvantaged.

The imperative to strive for social justice in its manifest forms expresses one of the core elements of Christian belief. The word ‘solidarity’ captures the sense of determination and commitment needed if we are to succeed in reshaping our world with greater peace and justice.
